What is a Certified Nursing Assistant?

Nursing is a noble profession. Nurses work closely with patients, not only helping them reach their health goals, but as an active part of their care plan and ensuring that when they go home, they are able to continue getting healthy. If you are interested in a nursing career, becoming a certified nursing assistant is a good way to begin.

What is a Certified Nursing Assistant?

A Certified Nursing Assistant, usually shortened to CAN, is a health care professional who works closely with patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

The primary responsibilities of a certified nursing assistant are basic care and hygiene for patients such as feeding, dressing, and bathing, as well as checking patients’ vital signs. They work primarily in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and long-term care facilities.

Certified Nursing Assistant Training

For those who are interested in a career in nursing, becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant is a good way to begin. The certification process is much quicker than other nursing certification levels, and allows you to start your nursing career and get hands-on experience right away.

Certified nursing assistant training requires a high school diploma or GED, complete the Certified Nursing Assistant training program, and pass the certification exam. Most training programs can be completed in six to twelve weeks. Some states may have specific requirements, so it is important to check with your state licensing board for additional information.

Certified nursing assistants are also required to renew their licenses regularly. Specifics about licensing and re-certification requirements vary by state.

A certified nursing assistant is an essential part of a patient’s care plan. He or she is responsible for the basic needs of patients so they can focus on recovering and getting healthy in order to be able to take care of themselves. Earning your certification as a certified nursing assistant gives you the chance to work directly with patients without spending years in a certification program first. Instead, you can get your license and start working sooner and be well on your way to helping people in your dream career.
