What to Expect from Your Nursing Assistant Training

How to Select Your Nursing Assistant Training

When you make the decision to become a nurse’s assistant one of the first things you need to do is pick the right nursing assistant training. There are many different schools available and each one will offer different benefits to its students. It is a good idea to take your time and research each school before you decide on the one that right for you. While this may take some time it will ensure that your final decision is the right one.

Once you have chosen a school you may be wondering what you can expect in terms of class structure and certification. Below is a guide on what you will learn in your nursing assistant training and what to do once you have finished with your courses.

Skills You Will Learn

The best types of nursing assistant training programs combine book learning with hands-on training. Most programs will provide between 100-120 hours of overall training where you will learn in lecture and lab-based settings. Some of the subjects that you will study include anatomy, mental health nursing, psychosocial care, physiology, nutrition, ethics, communication, patient privacy, and general patient care. In addition to lecture and lab work you will also participate in role playing demonstrations, class discussions, and video presentations. Once you have completed a certain number of hours in your classes you may be taken to a local hospital for hands-on training under a

professional nurse who will allow you to take some of the components you have learned in class and apply them to hospital or clinic patients. Procedures you will perform include changing the bed linens, grooming and cleaning patients, and ensuring the patients general comfort.

Becoming Certified

Once you have completed your nursing assistant training you will be prepared to pass the state exam. Your state’s Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam will consist of a written and clinical portion. You must pass both portions of the exam to become certified as a nurse’s assistant. Both of these test sections will be based on everything that you have learned in your nursing assistant school so it is important that you fully understand the work you are doing in your classes so that you will have the knowledge to pass the state exam. After you are certified you may begin looking for CNA positions.

Becoming a CNA takes hard work and dedication. Luckily most nursing assistant training programs are designed to help you pass the state exams and learn CNA techniques that will prepare you for real-world experience.
